Nicole Kidman is reportedly interested in becoming a death doula.
The Babygirl star said that she wanted to learn more about the end-of-life carer role during her appearance at the University of San Francisco’s Silk Speaker Series. The Oscar-winning star shared that the experience of losing her mother nearly two years ago prompted her to consider the need for more support in end-of-life care.
“As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” she told the crowd.
She and her sister attempted to ease their mom’s isolation, but the gaps in what they could manage and what their mother needed made her “...wish there were these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.”
As a result, Kidman is now interested in exploring the profession. “That’s part of my expansion,” she said, “and one of the things I will be learning.”
Kidman’s mother, Janelle, passed away in September 2024 at the age of 84.
Kidman was at the Venice Film Festival representing her film, Babygirl, when she received news that her mother had died. She left the festival upon hearing and was unable to accept her award for Best Actress for the film, but she dedicated her award to the memory of her mother.
In a statement that was read by the film’s director, who accepted the award on the actress’s behalf, Kidman said, “This award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me.”
