It’s been 25 years since Legally Blonde premiered in theatres, kicking off a pop culture phenomenon in the form of one comically girly character named Elle Woods. Now, the comedy starring Reese Witherspoon as the pink-clad sorority girl that goes to Harvard Law School to prove she’s capable of being the kind of serious big-deal partner to her jerky wannabe politician boyfriend is getting the prequel treatment with a new Prime Video series called Elle.
This week, in anticipation of its July 1 streaming premiere, Prime Video released a first-look trailer at the show early this week.
Here’s what we know about the series so far.
The series gives the audience the chance to meet a teenage Elle Woods, played by newcomer Lexi Minetree. Like the original film, the TV series plays out as a comic fish-out-of-water coming-of-age story—only this time, teenage Elle has to grapple with a big move rather than a college breakup. Woods’ parents have announced they’re leaving the posh L.A. neighbourhood of Bel Air for Seattle, a culture shock that drops a primly pink Elle into a 1990s-era Seattle high school. It’s a clever idea to plop Woods in the flannel-lined belly of the grunge-era beast, and it soon becomes clear that even a pink-accented Nirvana T-shirt isn’t going to smooth her transition into a new school.
Elle doesn't just premiere at the top of July—it drops wholesale. Every episode will be available to stream starting on July 1, meaning you can watch Elle morph into something like the young woman we meet in the 2001 movie in real-time. And if the trailer is any indication, there are even some Easter eggs for fans of the character's future arc. (Hint: one tiny chihuahua makes a first entrance.)
In case you’re worried that the OG Elle Woods might be side-eyeing the series, rest assured Reese Witherspoon is involved. She’s an executive producer on the series, and her production company, Hello Sunshine, is behind the prequel.
In a Prime Video release announcing the series back in May 2024, Witherspoon cheered the return of Elle.
“Legally Blonde is back!” she enthused. “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!”
The jury is out on whether Witherspoon’s enthusiasm is grounded in evidence. But luckily viewers will get to render their judgments starting on July 1.
