In search of your next guaranteed-to-be-great read? I have some excellent news: seven of the best books I’ve read in the past year are on sale right now as part of Amazon Prime Big Deals Day 2024.
Big Deals Days takes place on October 8 and 9, and if you don't have a Prime membership, no problem—you can sign up for a 30-day trial and also take advantage of free delivery.
Here are seven books I read recently and absolutely loved, all on sale and all worthy of a spot in your TBR stack, plus 10 additional Chatelaine favourites—all on sale now.
This incredibly inventive novel is currently in a three-way tie for my favourite read of 2024. (My other two favourites are Sandwich by Catherine Newman—see below—and All Fours by Miranda July, which is unfortunately not on sale but which you absolutely should read.)
The lowdown: When Londoner Lauren returns from a drunken night out, she’s greeted by a man who says he’s her husband. This is confusing, because when Lauren left the house that evening, she was single. As it turns out—and bear with me here, this premise is outrageous but it totally works—her attic has started generating a never-ending supply of spouses. Every time one goes up, a new one comes down. Some are better than others, and the situation causes myriad complications. Lauren must eventually roll the dice and make a decision about when to stop sending men back up the stairs.
I first encountered Catherine Newman via her home tour on Cup of Jo. I love the eclectic, lived-in vibe of her space, and once I started reading more of her work I realized she is my favourite kind of writer: hilarious.
Like Newman, Sandwich protagonist Rocky is also hilarious. The book chronicles Rocky’s annual family vacation to Cape Cod with her husband, kids and aging parents, as well as the realities of life as a 50-something menopausal woman. One of my favourite lines is this one, about brain fog: “Picture your pretzels spiralling out of the vending machine and getting stuck halfway. Every single item in your memory is that ungettable Snyders bag… Forget it. Oh you already have! Ha ha ha ha.” Brilliant.
The third lakeside romance by bestselling author (and former Chatelaine editor) Carley Fortune, has it all: a strong female friendship, spicy sex scenes and some excellent Anne of Green Gables references.
Okay, technically this is a seaside romance—unlike Fortune’s first two novels, which are set in Ontario—This Summer Will Be Different takes place in Prince Edward Island. The relationship between florist Lucy and champion oyster shucker Felix just might be Fortune’s dreamiest love story yet, but I actually enjoyed the friendship between Lucy and her BFF Bridget even more. Still not sold? Read an excerpt first.
I nominated this book for my book club, and it did not disappoint—it was a quick read that generated a lot of conversation. Cleopatra and Frankenstein follows the relationship between Cleo, a 24-year-old artist, and Frank, the 40-something creative director of an ad agency in post-9/11, pre-Instagram New York City. They marry six months after they meet; their relationship (and their entire friend circle) eventually implodes.
Mellors has been described as an edgier Sally Rooney, and Cleopatra and Frankenstein—her first novel, which came out in 2022—has garnered a similar amount of buzz. Case in point: Shortly after its release, the book made a guest appearance on Carrie Bradshaw’s nightstand in season two of And Just Like That.
Sure, seven percent off is not a substantial deal but this is the best, most compelling thriller I’ve read in years. I actually took a hiatus from the genre as I was finding the plots too predictable, but I had absolutely no idea where this one was going—and I found the ending genuinely surprising (and sad).
Podcaster Alix is in search of a new project when she randomly meets Josie at a London pub. Both women are celebrating their 45th birthdays. A few days later, Josie orchestrates another run-in with Alix, and pitches herself as the subject of Alix’s next podcast. A wild story unfolds.
British writer Alderton’s most recent romcom-y novel is Good Material, but I loved 2022’s Ghosts more. Protagonist Nina is a single and successful cookbook author. Her dad is developing dementia, her mom is in denial about it and she’s having trouble connecting with her married-with-kids best friend.
In the midst of all of this, she meets Max, an handsome accountant with whom she has mad chemistry. It’s all going incredibly well, until—out of nowhere—he ghosts her. I don’t want to give anything away here, but do not expect a happily-ever-after ending. This book is all the better for it.
I came across this sweet and sexy romance via a glowing Globe and Mail review, and I can guarantee it’s the best $6 you’ll spend this year.
Celebrity assistant Georgie temporarily moves home from Los Angeles to her small town hometown. Two things happen quickly: She encounters a very handsome, very grouchy stranger named Levi and uncovers her high school diary, its pages filled with activities—jump off a dock, go shopping at the fanciest mall around—that 13-year-old Georgie had thought were the epitome of teen life. Unemployed adult Georgie decides to finally cross them off her list (with a little help from Levi, of course). This feel-good read is not as formulaic as it sounds.
