Forget a historic FIFA World Cup match on home soil—former prime minister Justin Trudeau had somewhere else to be.

While Canada kicked off the tournament in Toronto, Trudeau was in Los Angeles cheering on his pop-star girlfriend Katy Perry as she performed at the opening ceremony ahead of the United States match against Paraguay.

Canadians had one question: Sir, isn’t your team literally playing at home?

Trudeau was quick to explain himself after criticism poured in online, posting on X: “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” alongside a Canadian flag emoji.

This move is just the latest entry in the duo’s very public romance. Trudeau and Perry have been linked since July 2025 and recently made their PDA-filled red carpet debut in New York, where Perry declared him “the love of my life.” And today? The pair was papped smooching on a picnic blanket in Santa Barbara.

Call it a red card for patriotism or green-flag boyfriend behaviour, but one thing is clear: Justin Trudeau has officially entered his “girlfriend guy” era.
