Three fall must-apply beauty trends

The face of fall has us swooning. Makeup artists zeroed in on the lip with saturated lipstick colours while lip gloss took a backseat. With eyes wide open, the lashes are long and a strong brow rules. From the runway to your beauty bag, here's how to recreate the look.

Rogue reds

Whether you opt for a classic red seen on models at Diane Von Furstenberg or the orangey-red lip seen on the runway of Rick Owens, there’s no doubt that breaking out a tube of the right stuff can really transform your look. There’s a lip look for everyone so there’s no need to fear the bright colours.

How-to: If you’re opting for a deep rouge, use a lip brush for precise application of this statement maker and keep your blush and eye makeup minimum. Try a matte shade in the deep red of your choice for more staying power. For a more tangerine shade, apply a coat, dab with a tissue and then apply another on top with your fingers. This gives it a slightly unfinished look that’s sweet for day. Glosses are a great option if you want to test-drive the colour without commitment.

Extreme lashes

Seen on the runways of Anna Sui and Gianfranco Ferre, plush lashes can make your look complete or they can be the whole look on their own.

How-to: To get the most extreme lashes without falsies, start by curling your lashes with a pro curler and then pile on the mascara. Don’t let it dry in-between coats or it can get sticky. This season is all about the wide-eyed Twiggy look so you can also coat your bottom lashes. To avoid looking too garish, keep the rest of your makeup minimal. Keep your lips bare or dab on a subtle nude gloss.

For day: Smudge a glossy cream shadow in a taupe colour on lids to freshen up this lash look.
For night: When it comes to nighttime application, add to your lash line with a liquid liner or a kohl — stick with a liner instead of the over-done smokey eye. Use a kohl liner on the inner rim of the eye and apply a flesh coloured liner on your top lid to reduce any redness. Have a cotton swab dipped in eye makeup remover on hand to clean up any liner gaffs if you’re new to this type of application.

High brows

Strong eyebrows were showcased on the runways of Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander Wang. The bolder brows are dominant and stand out against a face of neutral makeup for this season. It gives the face a masculine/feminine combination that will help highlight your face in a whole new way.

How-to: To pull this off, make sure your eyebrows are groomed. Be wary of taking too much off the natural line of your brows — this look is not about thin, over-arched brows. Pair this with a dewy complexion achieved with a moisturizing foundation and make sure to brush your brows in a straight line and upward to pull this off. Set them with a clear brow gel and focus on the lips if you’re highlighting your eye area already.
