Spring manicures

The new nude

Using nail-art striping tape, section off a few areas on bare nails, then apply two coats of a nude polish. Gently remove the tape while the polish is still wet. "The key is a crisp line so it looks deliberate," says manicurist Rita Remark.

Mother of pearl

Paint nails in a dark plum shade and apply a clear top coat. While it's still wet, press a craft-store pearl or jewel onto the centre of the nail. "This is fun for a night out, but it won't necessarily survive cleaning the house the next day," says Remark.

Rose quartz

Apply a nude polish to the nail and wait until it's dry. Then, using a fine paintbrush from the dollar store, paint on thin squiggles in a dark colour to create the quartz texture. Layer on a metallic shade to add depth to your lines.
