The most revealing thing about Lena Dunham's lingerie photo

A self-professed over-sharer, Dunham hits the right note with a recent Instagram photo of herself in sexy knickers.

The most revealing thing about Lena Dunham's lingerie photo

When Dunham posted a sexy photo of herself in lingerie on Memorial Day weekend, it weirdly felt like we were seeing her body for the first time, a glimpse of her true self. This wasn't a calculated use of exhibitionism, a body-positive rallying cry — although it's great that many have lauded her for that. Instead, it came across as one of those rare moments when a woman, of any shape or size, feels particularly sexy and confident, and thinks, what the hell, let's document that.

And because she's Lena Dunham and nothing's private, she sent it out to 1.7 million of her closest Instagram friends — adding a somewhat silly/somewhat political comment to go with it: "Love my @lonelylingerie and I think I will wear it to dinner with some boots & a smile because we are all very lucky to be free."

For those who've seen Dunham's body in many stages of undress, numerous times (or too many times, see: Put your Clothes on, Lena Dunham), this photo felt different: Agenda-less, done on a whim, unconfrontational, even private. Maybe the best way to describe it is to use Lonely Lingerie's own tagline: "For women who wear lingerie as a love letter to themselves." She wasn't wearing these sexy garments for her boyfriend, and the photo wasn't exactly for us. But in this case, Dunham's need to share is greatly appreciated.
