The most refreshing part of Gwen Stefani's divorce

Most celebrity divorces sound as polite as an afternoon tea.

Gwen Stefani got real about the breakup of her 13-year marriage to Gavin Rossdale in a radio interview Thursday.

"I got a divorce, which was completely not in the plan at all," she told Z100 radio host Elvis Duran. The mom of three reportedly discovered that Rossdale was was cheating with the nanny. "I don't know. For me, it surely wasn't. A shock. A horrible, crazy year and explosion in my life."

In other words, the 46-year-old's split was messy and hard. That's not what we usually hear from celebrities about divorce. Take Gwyneth Paltrow's "conscious uncoupling" from Chris Martin last year: The actress wrote an entire manifesto describing her amicable split — founded on "mutual respect" and her children's needs — as "an alternative to a nasty divorce." Then there's Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. The pair put on brave faces and took their kids to Disney amidst rumours that he was cheating with the nanny (how original). No longer together, the couple is reportedly building an adjoining house for their family. Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom say they are "really close" since divorcing — they live just five minutes apart.

This isn't the case for Stefani, and that's refreshing. Her comments are honest. "Horrible," "crazy" and "explosion" are words you hear friends say when they talk about divorce. She isn't sugar-coating her experience. Maybe that's why her song "Used to Love You" is topping charts. As she confirms in the interview with Z100, the song is a reflection of the devastating breakup.
