A 2012 study in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found that canned produce can help people increase their fruit and vegetable intake without breaking the bank — or sacrificing nutrition. Turns out, when compared portion to portion, canned tomatoes have the same amount of dietary fibre as fresh ones but are 60 percent less expensive, and canned spinach provides similar amounts of vitamin A and folate but costs 85 percent less than fresh.
