Playful, whimsical, a little nostalgic—the polka-dot motif has always had a timeless appeal, but it transcends seasons, too. Last summer's dot craze shows no sign of slowing down. Case in point: Rendered in dark hues and luxe materials, like faux fur and leather, or brought to life via 3-D embellishments, polka dots showed their sophisticated side on winter's runways.

To get the look, take a cue from the year's biggest trends with layers upon layers of flowy silk, sheer fabrics and dramatic draping. Here are the pieces that sold us on the return of polka dots—and a few tips on how to adapt what's already in your wardrobe to the colder seasons.

Maguire Slingback Mule, $265

If you're unsure about a head-to-toe polka-dot look, try a statement shoe. These kitten-heel mules from Montreal-based footwear brand Maguire are a Team Chatelaine favourite for spring. The pony-hair leather and playful pattern give the sophisticated silhouette a cool, modern twist.

H&M Draped Mesh Dress, $60

This ankle-length frock hits on two of this year's biggest trends: polka dots and sheer layers. Pair it with tall boots and a few accessories for a low-effort, high-impact look.

Mango Polka Dot Lace Top, $130

Lingerie-style pieces are having a moment, and a satin slip is an easy way to experiment with the trend. The asymmetric hem on this lace-trimmed top makes it a layering MVP; worn over pants and skirts, it adds dimension and texture. Add a black long-sleeved top—like this wool-blend one by Montreal designer Eliza Faulkner—underneath to winter-proof the look.

Facile Press-on Nails in Ribonnette, $24

We love press-on nails because they're more affordable than a salon mani and—if you know how to apply them properly—they last just as long. This adorable set designed by Montreal-based nail artist Alexa Liberatore is a fun way to wear dots.

Polka dots may be fun and sweet, but this top proves that they have a chic side, too. Accessorize with a red lip for the ultimate French girl-approved combo.

Sézane Lizy Cardigan, $230

Maxi skirts are seasonless staples, and we love this lace-trimmed option from Simons' house brand Twik. You can wear it with cardigans and tights over the winter, but it will also transition effortlessly to spring and summer with a few easy swaps.

Dynamite Satin Scarf, $20

A satin scarf that can be styled in multiple ways (In your hair! Around your neck! Worn as a belt!) is a must-have this year. This spotted style is as classic as they come.
