Jeans 101: The anatomy of your favourite pants

Knowing your denim terminology will help you find the perfect pair.

Rise: Measurement from top of the waistband to bottom of the crotch seam.

Waist measurement: Circumference around the natural crease in your midsection.

Hip measurement: Distance around the fullest part of your hips when standing with your feet together.

Leg opening: Size of the bottom hem.

Stud button: The metal button that secures the fly's closure.

Coin pocket: Also called the fifth pocket, it was originally designed to hold a watch.

Bar tack: Extra-protection stitching that reinforces stress points.

Selvage: A tightly woven band attached to the unfinished edges of denim to prevent the fabric from unravelling.

Rivet: Permanent metal fastener that reinforces stress points.

Inseam: Distance from bottom of the crotch seam to bottom of the hem along the inside leg seam.
