Ingredients

  • 6 medium potatoes, about 1 kg

  • 4 garlic cloves, peeled

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp white or black pepper

  • 1 tbsp butter or olive oil

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour cream

Instructions

  • Peel potatoes and cut in half. Place in a large saucepan along with whole garlic cloves. Cover potatoes with water. Place saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat to medium or medium-low and boil gently, partially covered, until potatoes are fork-tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Then drain well, if needed. Turn into a bowl.

  • Mash potatoes with garlic cloves using a potato masher or by putting them through a ricer. Stir in remaining ingredients. If not warm enough, return to saucepan and stir over medium-low heat until hot. Or heat in the microwave on medium until they are as warm as you like.
