Sabra Canada Inc. announced on Saturday it is recalling a variety of hummus products sold across Canada and the United States due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall affects hummus products of varying flavours and sizes with best-before dates up to and including Jan. 23, 2017. The 'best before' date can be found on the lid of each product.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there have been no reported illnesses associated with these products. The recall, issued by Sabra (which produces Middle Eastern-style food), is due to concerns over Listeria identified at its manufacturing facility in Virginia — not in the tested finished product.

Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that rarely affects healthy people, but it can be life-threatening for people with impaired immune systems, unborn babies and newborns. Pregnant women and elderly people are also at a higher risk for infection. The bacteria can survive refrigeration and even freezing, and food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause sickness. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, nausea, severe headache and neck stiffness.
