Like many seniors, the residents of Winnipeg’s Misericordia Place personal care home have often been asked to share advice with younger generations. Now, a new audio project is making that advice accessible to all.
The Misericordia Life Advice Line offers 10 prerecorded tidbits of wisdom from residents of the home—on everything from dating (“Most guys out there are hopeless,” says Susan) to general life advice (“Listen to your mother,” 97-year-old Nina adds) to fashion advice (“Don’t wear a sleeveless blouse. Men can look down your armpit,” says Geraldine) to, yes, even moose hunting (“They can’t see very good, but they can hear very good,” says Maurice).
The project, which launched this fall to international fanfare, was designed by Misericordia Place artists-in-residence Francesca Carella Arfinengo, Natalie Baird and Toby Gillies, who hold art workshops with residents at the home. The three were inspired to create the hotline thanks to the lively anecdotes the seniors would share during their art sessions.
Baird told CTV News in September that she hopes to rotate in more sage advice soon—so fresh wisdom is always just a phone call away.
