Freshen up

You want to feel fresh in them mornings, even before you hit the bathroom. A crisp, light and cloud-like set of bedding will make waking up (and getting back into bed later) sheer delight. Opting for neutral hues like white or cream also lets you play around with textured and colourful throws (especially season to season). A little duvet detail can create refined drama, demonstrated by the pintuck-pleated perfection of this West Elm product.

Whether you’re working with two nightstands or one, brighten your bedroom with a noteworthy lighting fixture. Pottery Barn’s Alexis Ceramic Table Lamp establishes an elegant aura even before it’s switched on. Pair it with some bedside books to complete the comfiest place to curl up with a story.

My two scents

Nothing refreshes a room better than a signature scent. Enhance your bedroom with some sweet smells that act as both air fresheners and wonderful olfactory accents. Indigo’s ample selection of whimsy candles and diffusers offers the perfect finishing touches for dressers, consoles, desks and nightstands.

Bedside style

Decorating your bedside table is one of the easiest ways to bring charm, style and functionality to your bedroom instantly. Designer, stylist and blogger Emily Henderson explains that it’s “these little moments you can put on your nightstand that make getting into bed that much more fun.” Once you’ve picked out the basic elements, the styling can begin! Here, she’s featured a delicate, retro and stylish bedside vignette, comprising candles, jewellery, books and an antique illuminator.

Tip: A fresh pot of flowers or a plant is the best accessory of all.

Hardware hack

If a quick fix is what you need, a knob job is in order. Home retailers are overflowing with vast varieties of designs, colours, shapes, sizes and materials when it comes to the hardware department. If you don’t love your chest of drawers anymore, create the illusion of a new one in 10 minutes with a few twists and additions. This Ikea dresser was refit with some brightly patterned knobs to transform it into a new, joyful dresser.

Tip: Visit Anthropologie and Zara Home for adorable knob accessories, or Lowes and Home Depot for a tighter budget.

Go custom

Choosing a more hands-on project for your bedroom makeover can take up extra energy, yet it often makes all the difference for a beautifully bespoke space. In this case, opting out of a bookcase and into built-ins can reduce your furniture bulk, while establishing a more functional yet stylish approach to storage. These Ikea wall shelves are only $20 apiece, and an extra $20 if you choose the brackets too. This is economy for your wallet as well as your wall.

Window dressing

Window treatments have the tendency to make or break a room’s charm. Refine your look with a set of curtains or drapes that complements the warmth and grace of natural light. Allow the sun’s rays to make the statement.

Save space with style

Even if your bedroom is also your office, there’s no need to take style shortcuts in the name of saving space. Begin with a slender work surface that can accommodate your laptop, then get creative with your desk chair. Outdated office chairs can rob rooms of their elegance, so modernize your multi-purpose chamber with something contemporary. This glamorous ghost chair offers both comfort and appeal, plus its translucent appearance minimizes its spatial presence. If you’re spending ample time at your desk, add a comfy cushion.
