Hang a string of decorative outdoor lights from a patio ceiling or umbrella, or use picture-hanging wire to suspend lanterns for an instant outdoor dining room.

Create a one-of-a-kind oversized lantern by wrapping a large vase with an aluminum radiator-cover panel. Secure with nuts and bolts, and you’ve got a simple and modern lighting solution. Place one on either side of your door for a dramatic statement, or run some up your front steps to greet guests.

Scan your kitchen for objects that can be turned into lanterns. We used a cheese grater over a small glass votive-candle holder to create a dappled light effect.

Scour garage sales and vintage stores for interesting cans and canisters. Drill through them with a metal drill bit to create decorative glowing patterns.
