Although skinny jeans (and, ahem, leggings) have a special place in our heart, the wide-leg trouser is a welcome addition to any wardrobe. The roomy cut on the bottom pairs well with shorter tops that hit the waistband, as well as longer knits. Come spring, swap in a pair of peep-toe flats and a jean jacket.
Coat, $230, Esprit. Cabled raglan crewneck, $95, Frank & Oak. Wide-leg bi-stretch pants, $124, Banana Republic. 996 Textile, $110, New Balance.

Not to discount the classic black dress, but a print — bold or subtle — is one of the fastest and simplest ways to inject personality into a look. Opt for a shape that flatters you and pay attention to the hemline so it can be worn with and without tights.

Regardless if the silhouette is skinny, flared or wide-leg, the high-waisted style is worth a try — especially if you’ve ever encountered the dreaded muffin top (or chef hat, as we prefer to call it). A navel-skimming style also allows for more styling options, since tops and tees can be either tucked in or worn loose over top.

Length is key for this piece, worn open with skirts and dresses or belted over trousers for a more polished take. Look for styles with a streamlined lapel (rather than a waterfall neckline) for maximum versatility.
