In the spotlight: At the Massey Hall in Toronto

1. Look for a shimmery cocktail dress

Special evening on your calendar? Swap your LBD for something with a little more star power. A strappy slip dress covered with monochromatic sequins is just as sophisticated (and way more fun).

L'Wren Scott dress, $250; Ring, $50; Bracelet, $74, Banana Republic. Stole, price on request, Adrienne Landau. Dannijo necklace, $545, Holt Renfrew.

2. Look for a tuxedo jacket

For a fresh take on the classic evening look, pair a polished tuxedo jacket (satin lapels are a must!) with everything from patterned pants to boyfriend jeans.

Isabel Marant pour H&M jacket, $150, H&M. Top, $410; Pants, $495, Dennis Merotto. BCBG Maxazria necklace, $138, BCBG.

Holiday hair tip: To add drama try a deep side part or backcomb at your crown for extra height.

3. Look for a slimming pencil skirt

A touch of metallic makes anything look special. Heading out for celebratory cocktails? Top your tailored skirt with a slouchy, glittery sweatshirt and you’re party ready.

Opening Ceremony top, $395, The Bay. Skirt, $275, Pink Tartan. Shoes, $120, Nine West. Bracelet, $50, Ann Taylor.

4. Look for a glam (and cozy) sweater

As far as we’re concerned, this is the ultimate evening outfit: a full satiny skirt and crewneck sweater.

Top, $249, Line Knitwear. Skirt, price upon request, Lucian Matis. Bracelet, $50, Ann Taylor

Holiday hair tip: Before you style, start with a texturizing spray to get a tousled, voluminous look.

5. Look for navy for night

Holiday dressing doesn’t have to be stressful. Keep it simple and go for comfortable classics with interesting embellishments.

Collection Thomas Mason for J.Crew top, $580, J.Crew. Skirt, $325, Pink Tartan. Shoes,$535, Stuart Weitzman. Bracelet, $50, Banana Republic.

6. Look for knits that sparkle

A cozy sweater with glittery details is pure perfection!

Top, $148, French Connection. Headband, $29, Fashion Crimes. Ring, $50, Banana Republic

Beauty note: If you’re going for a statement lip, line your eyes with black liquid liner and finish with a couple of coats of mascara. Take the look up a notch with false lashes — they’re easier than you think.

Holiday hair tip: Instant party do? Sweep your hair back into a messy bun and fasten with bobby pins. Throw on a sparkly headband.

7. Look for sequins and beads

These days black tie doesn’t mean you have to wear (or invest in) a gown. Instead, choose dazzling pieces that work well with everything in your closet. Case in point: This flowy shirt also looks killer with a pair of jeans.

Top, $570, J.Crew. Coat, $229, Calvin Klein. Skirt, $70, Express

Holiday hair tip: If you’re going for an updo, wash your hair the night before. Squeaky-clean hair is harder to control.

8. Look for a pastel coat

Soft, plush coats are taking centre stage this season. From pretty pastels to rich gem tones, now’s the time to add a colourful topper to your wardrobe.

Carven coat, $1,050, The Bay. Top, $130, Club Monaco. Repetto skirt, $110, Suffolk Pointe Company Ballet. Jimmy Choo shoes, $525, Davids Footwear. Necklace, $69, Fashion Crimes
