Find your inner ballerina

The beautifully whimsical costume design by the Rodarte sisters for Black Swan has made us ballet obsessed for months now. But alas, elaborate Black Swan make-up and feather trimmed tutus are definitely not everyday wear. So, we here at the Style Desk have conjured an everyday take on ballet attire to help you channel your inner pretty dancer.

This look is accessible and versatile for women of all ages and body types with a few tweaks here and there.

On top, pick a more constructed tank top long enough to be tucked in,or opt for a leotard. Choose the width of the strap of the tank according to the width of the shoulder – the broader the shoulders the skinnier the strap. For modesty, cover up with a simple and cute shrug, or wrap sweater.

The key to finding the perfect ballet-esque skirt that is appropriate for everyday wear is attention to material and length. An over-the-knee length is appropriate and flattering for all ages. Shy away from the classic stiff construction of tulle and pick softer pleated chiffon for easy breezy elegance.

Complete your outfit with flats, wedge sandals or heels depending on the occasion. This look can be casual, work appropriate, or formal! We would suggest a nude colour shoe as it creates the illusion of height.

Play with vibrant spring colours such as this season’s hottest coral for a flirty grande battement.

Finally, keep your make-up and hair clean and simple with dainty accessories, just like a ballerina at practice would.
