Trend alert: 10 rash guards for the sand and surf

You don't have to surf to wear a rash guard (heck, you don't even have to leave your beach towel). Here are 10 ways to make a sun-safe style statement.

The perfect solution to soaking up the sun and staying burn-free this summer is to wear a protective and oh-so-trendy rash guard. These long-sleeved swim shirts (worn over a swimsuit) got their name from surfers and sporty types who need extra protection from the sun and their boards. Today, rash guards come in a wide range of colours and patterns (check them out in the gallery below). Keep an eye out for skin-saving styles that have UPF 50+ (ultraviolet protection factor for clothing), which blocks 98 percent of the sun's harmful rays.
