There's no need to let the chilly weather trap you indoors. With these five stylish (and toasty) wardrobe tricks, you'll be snug and cosy for long afternoon walks-or even just the 30-second walk from your car to the workplace.
Thin layers
When the temperature drops, try layering with lightweight fabrics, such as a long-sleeve cotton top under a camisole and blazer. Just think: you'll get more mileage out of your summer tops and keep your arms and chest warm without the bulk.
Gap Body makes some of the best seamless thin camisoles, T-shirts and long-sleeved tops to layer with each other or wear alone. They also come in a variety of colours to go with any outfit.
Shoulder coverage
This fall, shrugs, ponchos and shawls are the hottest new accessories. It's a trend that can easily be worn by women of any age, and they are available in a range of fabrics. Chunky knit versions are casual enough to wear over a classic turtleneck and jeans, while velvet- or fur-trimmed numbers can instantly dress up a basic black dress.
Belted waists
A belt, ribbon or scarf worn over a fitted jacket or cardigan was such a flattering trend for spring that it's been carried over to the fall. But this time, wrap-style tops or single-breasted coats are best. TIP: Avoid over-tightening the belt. This can create an exaggerated hourglass instead of a slimming effect.
Mixing lengths
Try pairing a long wrap cardigan over cropped pants and knee-high boots, or a vintage-style three-quarter-length sleeved jacket with elbow-length gloves. A tunic dress worn with low-rise pants may sound like an odd couple, but looks really flattering and fun.
Skinny scarves
This season sees the resurgence of the scarf-tie blouse (very prim and proper). But, if this trend has you grimacing, a skinny scarf accessorized with a blazer is the next best choice. Cotton knit versions can create a casual look, while silky styles are a cool alternative to a traditional rope of pearls.
TIP: Knot the tie once and fasten a glittery brooch at the neck for an extra-special touch.
