Are you prepared for winter's extreme beauty challenges? With the right products and tools, you can fight off dry skin and static-filled hair. Here's how to solve five common winter-related beauty problems.

The problem
Bleak winter days make your dark under-eye circles more noticeable.
The solution
Look bright-eyed and alert in minutes with a few dabs of an easy-to-blend, light-reflecting concealer. (Bonus: this can also minimize fine lines!) Try Lola Crème Concealer Compact, available in four shades, $28. For more about Lola, visit Lolacosmetics.com.

The problem
The elements leave your skin less than toned.
The solution
Get facelift-like results – without going under the knife or into debt – by using a skinfirming lotion such as Shiseido Bio-Performance Super Lifting Formula, 30 mL/$84. This lifting cream targets elasticity loss and instantly smoothes and tones skin. Shiseido is available at the Bay and Sears.

The problem
Thanks to indoor heating, your wavy hair refuses to behave.
The solution
Your hair needs moisture and frizz-free control, so look for products specifically made for your tress type, such as the LaCoupe Perfect Curls collection. A quick spray of Perfect Curls Refresh Instant Curl Reviver, 120 mL/ $7, brings limp coils back to life and reduces frizz before your eyes – ideal for midday touch ups. Look for LaCoupe products at Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs, Zellers and Wal-Mart.

The problem
Your skin is soaking up moisture faster than you can say "Sahara Desert."
The solution
Treat your dry, sensitive or irritated skin to a little TLC with Avène Instant Soothing Moisture Mask, 50 mL/$30. Made with 73 per cent thermal spring water and other nourishing ingredients, your face will thank you for this softening and refreshing facial treatment.

The problem
Stumbling around half asleep in the morning leads to makeup mishaps.
The solution
This one's a two-stepper. First, a little splash of water can get you out of a fog, so make the most of this morning ritual with an invigorating cleanser. Try Benefit Fantasy Mint Wash, 150 mL/$29, with refreshing mint and gentle aloe that wakes you up and leaves your skin sparkling clean. Second, simplify your makeup routine with a multi-tonal eye colour such as Cargo R.adiant E.ye M.ovement Eye Shadow, $22. Available in eight illuminating shades, the sponge-tip wand makes application foolproof. Check out Benefit products at select Bay stores and at Sephora.com.
