Q: How can I prevent my nails from chipping after a manicure?

It's the extra coats of polish--the base and topcoat--that make all the difference in a long-lasting manicure.

First, remove old polish, moisturize your hands and make sure your nails are clean and dry. Then apply a base coat to help set the colour and protect nails from yellowing. Next, apply two coats of your favourite colour followed by a clear topcoat. This layer shields nails from chipping and gives polish a shiny finish. Use a quick-drying brand or make sure to wait at least 30 minutes for your nails to dry.

The biggest cause of chipping comes from using your nails as a tool--like for prying off a lid. No polish can stand up to constant abuse.   --Lisa Tant
