Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore, who picked up a statue for Best Actress, was a favourite before the Oscar season even began. Playing an accomplished academic diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's in Still Alice, Moore said she wanted her character to stay true to the effects of the disease, having prepared for her role doing research with Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers. Moore wore a brilliant Chanel gown to the Academy Awards.

Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Pike showed her wildly talented side when she took the leading role in the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling Gone Girl. Having previously played supporting roles, the British-born actress flexed her acting range in the complex, multi-faced character of Amy Dunne. Pike wore a glamorous, detailed, lace Givenchy dress.

Marion Cotillard

Marion Cotillard was almost unrecognizable in her role as factory worker who has two days to convince coworkers to let her keep her job. She's already won an Oscar for playing French icon Édith Piaf from early years to death, but Cotillard said her role in Two Days, One Night (for which she adopted a Belgian accent), was her toughest yet. Cotillard wore a dramatic Dior gown.

Lupita Nyong'o

After winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress last year for 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong'o cemented her star-status in both the entertainment and fashion worlds. She joked with Ryan Seacrest that the pressure's off this year and shared details about the uncanny side-by-side photo with her mother she posted days earlier. Nyong'o stunned in this pearlescent Calvin Klein gown.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon is frequently called America's sweetheart, but she wants you to look beyond that appearance. Nominated for Best Actress in her role as an independent backpacker in Wild, Witherspoon showed ferocity when she uploaded a photo directing reporters to the #AskHerMore campaign. Sure enough, hosts such as ABC's Robin Roberts, asked in-depth questions. Witherspoon wore a simple, form-fitting Tom Ford gown.

Gina Rodriguez

Gina Rodriguez made her first appearance at the Academy Awards for her role in Jane the Virgin. She inspired us with her Golden Globes acceptance speech this year, and we love that her dress is environmentally friendly. Rodriguez's gown was designed by Manon Gabard.

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones slipped into the role of Jane Hawking, supporter, partner and motivator of cosmologist Stephen Hawking. Knowing the film was based on Jane's memoir, Jones met with both Jane and Stephen to make sure the portrayal was accurate, right down to her voice and mannerisms. The result? Jane herself said she recognized herself in Jones. Jones wore a princessy Alexander McQueen gown.
