They may feel lightweight, but the newest serums pack plenty of punch. “They’re suitable for everybody and serve as a very convenient way to administer certain kinds of skincare benefits,” says dermatologist Dr. Frances Jang of Skinworks in Vancouver. “The smaller molecules in serums allow active ingredients to penetrate the skin faster, and in more potent doses.” Jang recommends women in their 20s seek serums containing antioxidants, such as vitamin C or E, which neutralize aging free radicals caused by exposure to sun and pollution. Retinol can be started in your 30s to boost collagen, while exfoliating serums benefit acne-prone women. As you age, switch to formulas with peptides, growth factors or proteins, which stimulate lagging collagen and elastin. Serums can be a pricey addition to your daily routine, but the good news is that a little goes a long way.
