When it comes to beauty, there’s no shortage of options; seemingly each day, there’s a new makeup, skincare or haircare product to swipe, blend, dab and lather. It’s my job to put them all to the test and vet them against my tried-and-true favourites to see what’s really worth the hype—and the money. Here are the new beauty products I’m currently using on repeat.
Quick, foolproof application is everything when it comes to lip products, and this crayon couldn’t be easier to use. It goes on creamy like lipstick, with the precision of a lip liner. Matte formulas get a bad rap for being drying, but this soft, blurred-effect lippie is packed with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, seaweed extract and rosehip oil.
This is a lip colour with serious staying power. I put Pink Door, my favourite of the 12 shades, to the test with several cups of coffee and, later, with a three-course dinner, and it passed with flying colours. It doesn’t bleed, it doesn’t slide around and it doesn’t settle into the lips so you can reapply throughout the day if needed.
Australian SPF brand Ultra Violette just made its debut in Canada, and it’s already shaping up to become a cult favourite. The brand’s “skinscreens” blend hydrating skincare actives and broad-spectrum sun protection, but what truly sets them apart is the ultra-wearable, comfortable textures of their products.
The fluid SPF feels more like a skincare essence than a sunscreen. It absorbs into the skin and leaves it silky and prepped for makeup. The chemical formula is fragrance-free (which is surprisingly hard to find) and contains niacinamide and vitamin C.
It’s not cheap by any means, but it’s a worthy splurge. Finding a sunscreen I actually want to wear? I call that a win.
Fresh off a salon appointment to refresh my highlights, I tested Moroccanoil’s purple-toned hair oil for Chatelaine’s Beauty Awards, and I was blown away. (Spoiler alert: It won Best New Hair Treatment.)
Like the original, it left my hair feeling silky, looking shiny and smelling like heaven. But it also came to the rescue about a month post-lightening when the brassiness started to set in. The violet pigments gave my lacklustre strands an instant boost, but they also worked over time to improve the look of my blonde.
When hot weather hits, I like to switch up my fragrance wardrobe from woody musks to fresh, citrusy scents. Miami Nectar by Brooklyn Ellis is a lot sweeter than what I typically spritz on, but I find myself going back to it over and over again. It smells like sun-soaked skin, sand and fruity cocktails—juicy notes of pineapple are paired with creamy coconut and grounded with jasmine, amber woods and vanilla. The opening is warm and tropical, but it dries down to the kind of musky base that’s right in my comfort zone. It’s safe to say I’ve found my new favourite summer scent.
Concealer is one of the first products I skip when I’m in a rush or trying to pare down my routine. I’ve never found quite the right fit—they’re either too thick or too sheer, too matte or too shimmery, too warm or too cool.
What I love about Saie’s new Slip Tint concealer is that it’s versatile. Its natural, skin-like finish means that it can be used under the eyes to brighten, where needed to cover up redness and blemishes or all-over in place of foundation. It gives medium coverage, but it can also be blended out into a lighter consistency.
I find concealer tends to crease almost immediately and leave my makeup looking less-than-fresh. Here, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and glycerin give the product a skincare boost that helps prevent it from settling into fine lines and dry patches.
