The top looks from last night's red carpet

The host, Billy Crystal kicked off the biggest night in Hollywood with much success but it was the action happening beforehand on the red carpet that had us giddy. What did the stars wear, who wore it best, and what trends emerged from the red carpet?

Here are the top beauty and fashion trends from the Oscars:
Beauty trends - A prominent red lip was on the pout of every leading lady from Oscar veteran Angelina Jolie to first-timer Milla Jovovich. The hair was down, in soft and sexy waves - we loved Jessica Chastain's half-ponytail and Kristen Wiig's beach-y 'do. Or, it was up in an extra-fluffy bun as seen on Jennifer Lopez and Tina Fey.

Fashion trends - The colour of the night was white as seen on Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford, Milla Jovovich, Georgina Chapman, Cameron Diaz and Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture. There were a few splashes of colour, and the best one was Michelle Williams' coral Louis Vuitton gown (see image). The colour was luxurious and she perfectly accented the hue with a pink lip and pink clutch. Williams was also wearing the most buzzed word of the night: peplum (the flared ruffle at her waist). The accessories were kept to a minimum  - less chokers and necklaces and more wide cuffs and rings. And, could the floor-length cape that Gwen donned emerge as a new trend?
