Juicy pork has a mild, slightly sweet taste and a fruitiness with the chutney. So, a fruity white wine, medium to full in body and dry but nicely rounded, or semi-dry, would be a good match. We have a good choice of Canadian whites that fit this description.
Chardonnays with a buttery ripe fruit taste include Cave Spring Cellars Chardonnay 1998 (Niagara Peninsula, $13), Sumac Ridge Chardonnay 1997 (Okanagan Valley, $14) and Inniskillin Culp Vineyard Chardonnay 1997 (Niagara Peninsula, $16).
This is an ideal time to be adventurous and try lesser-known varieties such as Gewürztraminer or muscat. From the Okanagan, there's Quails' Gate Gewürztraminer 1999 ($13), semi-dry with a lichee nut nose and taste. Calona Trilogy 1998 ($10), a blend of Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Bacchus, has floral orange-blossom aromas and off-dry, spicy, grape and lichee tastes. Gray Monk Latitude Fifty 1998 ($11) is medium-bodied with a spicy peach flavour. In Niagara, Hillebrand makes Vineyard Select Gewürztraminer 1997 (410), off-dry, with a character of lichee and melon and Vineyard Select Muscat Reserve 1997 ($11), also off-dry, with the typical floral, exotic fruit grapiness of muscat.
If you prefer reds or rosés, try a light-style Pino Noir or Sumac Ridge Okanagan Blush 1997 ($11), a blend of Pinot Noir and Ehrenfelser with tangy fruit flavours.
