A cook's garden: Progress on my container potatoes

Day 21: My spuds that are growing in a garbage bin are alive and well
By Kristen Eppich
garbage bin potatoes

When I first heard about the container gardening idea to grow potatoes in a garbage bin, I truly thought it was crazy. Now, having done it, I have to say, it is to date my most rewarding garden challenge. Not only is it easy, rabbit-proof, and fast growing, but it's also tons of fun for me and the kids.

So, 21 days since planting the seeds, my vines have reached approximately six inches in height - some a little more, some a little less. Today I reapplied soil, enough to cover half the length of the tallest vine. I also gave them a good drink, as I have been doing from time to time based on the feel of the soil. I'll continue to repeat this soil application until the vines begin to flower.

If you are interested in trying this technique, it's not too late. Seed potatoes are abundant in gardening stores now - and the planting is easy and fun.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm happy so many of you have decided to try it. Hopefully it won't be long until we are all reaching in and pulling up some potatoes!
