Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 2 tsp instant coffee granules

  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic salt

  • 1 tsp pepper

  • 4 T-bone steaks

Instructions

  • Oil grill and heat barbecue to high. In a small bowl, stir chili sauce with ground coffee, garlic salt and pepper. Place steaks on a baking sheet or platter. Dollop about a tbsp (15 mL) of sauce overtop each and spread to cover.

  • Place steaks, sauce side down, on grill. Spoon remaining sauce overtop steaks, spreading to cover. Barbecue, uncovered, 4 to 6 min a side for medium-rare if steaks are about 1 in. (2.5 cm) thick. Serve with extra chili sauce, if you wish. Great with baked potatoes and corn on the cob.

It's rumoured among ranch hands that coffee first ended up in a steak sauce after a mishap on the cookstove. We can't vouch for this, but we can say our coffee-rubbed steak is genuinely delicious.

SIZE MATTERS

T-bones are large, wide steaks. Use whatever cut of steak you like for this recipe, but if you choose smaller rib-eyes, tenderloins or strip loins you'll need less sauce. Simply cut the recipe in half.
