Try this crust variation. It's easier than you might think -- no machines required!
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cube
1/4 cup cold lard
3 to 6 tbsp ice-cold water
STIR flour with sugar and salt in a large bowl until combined. Add butter and lard. Using your fingertips, work mixture until finely crumbled. Stir in ice water just until pastry can easily be formed into a ball. Add more ice water, 1 tbsp at a time, if needed. Dough should not be sticky. Form into a disc. Wrap with plastic and chill in refrigerator for 1 hour.
