Spice Girls' "Wannabe" gets a feminist remix on its 20th birthday

When the Spice Girls made their debut in 1996, their brand of girl power (track pants, air kicks, smooching Prince Charles) was a little less subversive compared to today's standards. But a new viral video, okayed by Victoria Beckham herself, aims to take the band's cheeky battle cry even further.

The video, produced by Project Everyone, features performers from South Africa, the U.S., Canada and India, dancing to "Wannabe" alongside their feminist wishes: ending violence against girls, quality education for all, and an end to child marriage, to name a few. Using the hashtag #WhatIReallyReallyWant, viewers can tweet their own demands, which will be compiled and shared at the UN General Assembly in September.

The video even got a glowing endorsement from the fickle Posh Spice: "I think this film is a wonderful idea," she said in a statement. "How fabulous it is that after 20 years, the legacy of the Spice Girls' 'girl power' is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation."

Any chance Spice Girls reunion can be added to the list?
