Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared her admiration for longtime friend Shannen Doherty in a touching message praising her bravery in battling breast cancer. Gellar shared a photo of herself with the former Beverly Hills 90210 actress on Instagram on Monday (Aug. 8) along with some poignant words about their friendship.

"My #MondayMuse (and really every day #Muse) is my brave friend @theshando," she wrote. "I've always said she is one of the most loyal friends I've ever known, and now she is facing the toughest journey of her life, she is sharing it with friends she has never met in the hopes of helping other people who are going through the same struggle. That's a true friend," she touchingly added.

Doherty, 45, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2015, and has been candid about her fight against the disease. Last month she documented shaving her head on Instagram, sharing six images detailing the range of emotions she experienced. She captained the final image with two hashtags which read #cancersucks and #thankgodforfriends.

Then, just last week, Doherty, revealed that her cancer has spread. "I had breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, and from one of my surgeries we discovered that some of the cancer cells might have actually gone out of the lymph nodes," she told Entertainment Tonight. "So for that reason, we are doing chemo, and then after chemo, I'll do radiation."

"The unknown is always the scariest part," added Doherty, who has so far undergone three out of eight rounds of chemotherapy and had a single mastectomy back in May. "Is the chemo going to work? Is the radiation going to work? You know, am I going to have to go through this again, or am I going to get secondary cancer?
