I want to take up the wall-to-wall carpet in my family room. What are my options?

If you're lucky enough to have floorboards beneath, think about refinishing, or failing that, painting them instead. A fresh lick of white paint will dramatically brighten any room. Cork flooring is another option. It's warm to the touch and the added bounce it gives makes it great for kids.
