My mom always taught me to never arrive at someone's house empty handed, no matter the occasion. Sure, I used to argue with her as to whether this was truly necessary on every occasion, but these days I appreciate the gesture and consider it good etiquette as well as being thoughtful and kind.

And while Thanksgiving generally entails bringing along an assigned dish (or two), a special token of appreciation for your host goes a long way. And while a bottle of wine gets you a checkmark, why not go for full marks and give something special. Here are a few ideas your host will certainly be thankful for.

1. Bamboo nutcracker from Sears, which includes a separate dish to serve nuts.

2. Funky water and juice bottles from Dutch By Design, $10.95 ea. Available
online at www.dutchbydesign.com.

3. Donna Karan Home votives, set of four for $50 from The Bay.

4. Thornback & Peel's Her Majesty's Towel Service, tea towels $25 each,
Aprons $48 each and cards $6 each. Available at Good Egg  or Thornback & Peel.

5. Napa Valley olive oil and balsamic vinegar, $28 and $18 respectively,
from Chapters Indigo.

6. PC glass tea pot with infuser for $10 through Loblaws, Presidents Choice paired with Davids Tea Fall Collection.
