The right knobs, pulls, or handles can give your kitchen a whole new look. Follow these expert tips to find the best type for your space.

1. How many handles should I buy?

For wider drawers you have the option of two knobs or just one large handle. Figure out how many pieces you need and then see which configuration works within your budget.

2. What is my overall kitchen style?

Hardware is one of the ways you can define the look of your kitchen or bathroom. Traditional cup pulls have a decidedly classic appeal, while barely-there recessed tabs let the clean lines of a minimal, contemporary space take centre stage. If you want to inject a dose of glamour, try brass or glass knobs.

3. What finish should I choose?

Whether you’re choosing hardware for your kitchen or your bathroom, think about the other fixtures in the room — faucets, sinks, appliances. While not everything has to match, elements should work well together. A fail-safe solution is to have at least two things similar: a brass faucet with brass hardware, or black appliances with oil-rubbed bronze or black knobs.

4. How can I update my current hardware?

Handles and knobs are easy to update or switch out. If you are replacing, measure the holes, and select something with a similar length. Take into account doors that may open against one another, and make sure your new pulls don’t limit your ability to open the doors fully. If you love the design of your current knobs but want to try a new finish, consider having them stripped or refinished.

Designer tip: Acetone will remove the lacquer from shiny brass hardware, allowing it to develop a natural patina over time.
