1. Drapes

Updating your drapes can have a dramatic effect in any room. Switch out summer colours for darker shades, and don’t be afraid to play with pattern. How gorgeous is this Glardia pattern by Robert Allen in cobalt blue. Get the DIY to sew drapes: Twotwentyone.net.

2. Pillowcase

A low-budget way to update your bedding without shelling for new linens is with pillowcases – and they’re so easy to make. The key is to pick fabric that complements what you have existing. We love this fun fabric by Julia Rothman for a older kid’s room, which would match well with gray, black, navy blue, and even light mauve bedding. Get the DIY to sew pillowcases: Danamadeit.com.

3. Throw pillows

Use throw pillows to experiment with different looks in a room. Bold patterns, such as black and white stripes, add a touch of glam, but be sure to start with one pillow first – it may be all you need to achieve the look. Get the DIY to sew throw pillows: Designsponge.com.

They make great hostess gifts (and stocking stuffers!), so be sure to whip up a collection of custom linen napkins to keep on hand. Check out this geek-chic Sudoku fabric – fun! Get the DIY to sew linen napkins: Purlbee.com.
