It’s been 15 years since we upgraded our mattress. I decided it was time when I started experiencing back problems and tight muscles every time I woke up. (Sleep experts recommend replacing your mattress every 10 years or so.)
We were sleeping on a coil mattress, so I was interested in trying out a hybrid mattress, which uses both coils and memory foam. My husband tends to move a lot while he sleeps and he’s a stomach sleeper. I, on the other hand, am a hot back sleeper and I am sensitive to movement. Based on these factors, we felt that a hybrid mattress was the right mattress for us, so we tried the DreamCloud Premier Mattress. (Note: DreamCloud provided a free mattress to test for this review.)
The DreamCloud Premier Mattress consists of seven layers: the foam layers provide superior comfort and pressure relief, while the coil layers (containing 682 individually wrapped coils) promote airflow and reduce motion transfer. No more waking up to my husband moving around in the middle of the night!
The shipping for our queen mattress was free, and it was delivered in about two business days. It came packaged in a large cardboard box, and it was quite heavy, weighing just over 100 lbs. (You’ll likely need at least two people to move it.) Unboxing the mattress, we noticed no off-gassing odour.
Once my husband and I got the mattress out of the box, we placed it on our existing box spring. Right away, I noticed that the DreamCloud Premier Mattress was much higher than our previous mattress—at 14 inches, compared to 12 inches of my last mattress. Being a smaller person (I’m 5’2”), it can be a struggle getting into this bed. I have to hoist myself to get on the mattress. There also isn’t strong edge support on this mattress, so if I don’t get myself closer to the middle of the mattress when I get in, the edges start sagging and I start to roll off the side. And because of the mattress’ height, my standard bed sheets don’t fit as perfectly as they did before.
But for me and my husband, these are minor quibbles. If the height or edge support don’t work for you, though, DreamCloud offers a 365-day trial period to test out the mattress.
Even though I am a back sleeper and my husband is a stomach sleeper, we have both agreed that the DreamCloud Premier Mattress is comfortable. I used to wake up quite often to my husband shifting around in bed, but I find myself sleeping through the whole night.
It’s also a well-built, plush mattress. I love the buttery soft, cashmere quilted euro top. (I kid you not, I could not stop running my hands over the mattress top!)
Even after a few weeks of testing the DreamCloud Premier Mattress, I cannot wait to crawl into bed every night. I even had to kick my kids out of my bed a few times because they love how comfortable the bed is and they refuse to leave.
Overall, I love how comfortable the DreamCloud Premier is and I wake up feeling well-rested and refreshed. No more back pain!
Our testers sleep on each mattress for a minimum of 30 days, which experts recommend as a decent window for determining whether a mattress is the right fit for your needs. (For more expert insights on mattress shopping, see our post on buying a mattress below.)
Aside from comfort, we evaluate each mattress on the following criteria:
Edge support What is the degree of support around the edges of the mattress? This is important for people who frequently sit on the edge of the bed, as if there isn't strong edge support the edges will start to sag over time.
Motion isolation Could we feel our partner's movements—whether it's tossing and turning or getting up in the middle of the night? A mattress with strong motion isolation will prevent this.
Off-gassing How long did it take for the mattress to lose any noticeable odour after being unpacked? Clean, easy-to-breathe air is important to us.
How well it kept us cool Did the mattress trap heat as we slept, or did we feel cool throughout the night?
Return policy Does the company allow for at least a 30-day trial period?
Did our standard sheets fit? Some mattresses are deeper than others, which can interfere with how sheets fit.
Weight How much does the mattress way? Some experts correlate mattress weight with mattress quality, meaning a heavier mattress is likely to be made with better quality materials.
Above all, please note the mattress-buying process is highly subjective and it's a big purchase. This is why it's crucial to buy a mattress with a generous exchange or return policy.
