A warm welcome

One of the most eagerly anticipated settings to adorn with festive trimmings is unquestionably your railing. Festooning a banister to coordinate with your tree, holiday table and overall holiday color scheme is certainly a most welcoming touch. Your staircase gives you optimal opportunity to drape, hang and dress your railing with your beloved novelties, lifting your holiday décor to new heights.

Go green...then add colour

Evergreen swag, drapes of fresh garland interlaced with ribbons, lights, bells, or berries make for a wistful dressing for your balustrade. Garland can be found (or made) in every material imaginable. You can explore greenery such as cedar, pine, boxwood, bay leaf and holly, as well as swirling twigs and branches, lights, paper or bows. And while we all love the traditional Yuletide palette, not all rooms and homes wear it with equal poise. Some alternate palettes to consider include turquoise blue and fresh lime green, glistening silver and rosy pinks, orange and fuchsia, berry and jewel tones, wintry whites, and natural earthy tones with burlap, birch and pine cones.

Think outside the garland

You can select a theme that will guide you in your approach. For instance, you may wish to display your holiday greeting cards and pin them with an old-fashioned clothespin, or perhaps you’d like to hang your Christmas stockings in a similar fashion. Groupings of vintage accessories make for sentimental bundles of joy, or you can hang family heirlooms from varying widths of grosgrain ribbon. Dried fruits such as pomegranate, citrus or cranberry are sweet and charming, or modern snowy white feathers embraced with twinkling lights is minimal yet festively chic.
