There are few things as iconically Canadian as the Hudson’s Bay’s Stripes motif. Dating back to the 1700s, the company’s distinctive green, red, yellow and indigo patterned point blankets have a complicated history tied to the fur trade and the colonization of Indigenous land, but the stripes have also endured as a symbol of Canadian identity. So when Hudson’s Bay announced it was permanently closing its doors earlier this year—just as the “Buy Canadian” movement was ramping up—shoppers scoured the department store’s liquidation sales and reselling platforms to stock up on striped homewares.
If you didn’t get your hands on the coveted heritage accessories, we’ve got good news for you: Canadian Tire—who acquired the Hudson’s Bay Company brand assets, including the Stripes motif—is bringing back the timeless pattern in a limited-edition capsule for the holiday season. The collection will be available in stores from December 5 and will feature 26 cozy and festive pieces from the Hudson’s Bay’s archives, from classic striped blankets to fleece-lined mittens to espresso cups, as well as ornaments, stockings and adorable teddy bear nutcrackers. To pay homage to the company's most-popular item, there will be three blanket options for all budgets: a fleece throw for $30, a 100 percent wool throw for $130 and the star of the show, a queen-sized 100 percent wool point blanket for $450.
Canadian Tire called on Hudson’s Bay’s long-standing vendors to bring the collection to life as authentically as possible. The retailer has also committed to supporting The Blanket Fund—a reconciliation project launched in collaboration with the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund in 2022 to support Indigenous cultural, artistic and educational organizations—and will be donating a minimum of $1,000,000 every year, plus 100 percent of net proceeds from the sale of point blankets.
