The 19th annual Interior Design Show is known for showcasing innovative decor and setting the creative tone for the year ahead. Scoured by the country’s top design talent for inspiration, it's also open to the public. (If you're in Toronto, you can visit the show at the Metro Convention Centre until January 22nd.) Below, five of our favourite trends from this year's show.

Interior design show 2017

1. Statement rugs

IDS predicts that rugs will be used more and more as pieces of art for a room. (Think bold textures, colours, designs and sizes — like the room-filling rug shown above from J&M Republic.)

2. Smart-home lighting

Tech is becoming increasingly integrated into our homes, from smart appliances to phone-controlled lighting. Use an app or your voice to change the colours on the Nanofleaf Aurora LED light panels (available here) — create a sunrise in the morning and soothing blues and purples when you head to bed.

3. Bringing the indoors out

From condo balconies to residential backyards, our outdoor spaces are becoming an extension of our interiors. Grab some creative inspiration for your outdoor oasis from Natural Landscape Group (who designed the space above) and Land Art Design Landscape Architects Inc. at this year’s show.

4. Handmade decor

This year, IDS is exhibiting an array of independent designers who use local materials and make their products by hand — like this cabinet by Toronto designer Morgan Clayhall.

5. Modern takes on traditional pieces

IDS anticipates 2017 is going to see styles previously considered dated re-emerge, all given a fun, current feel with colours and texture — like this brilliantly blue credenza from Altea Furniture
