A recent study from the University of Michigan found that, in the lab at least, a little extra zinc can go a long way in helping individuals with type-2 diabetes. The metal is key in regulating blood sugar levels, as it protects  against misbehaving proteins that try to shut down insulin-producing cells. Researchers hope these results will lead to improved treatments for the disease — and even ways to prevent it.

In the meantime, make sure you get plenty of zinc. Turkey, shellfish and cashews are great natural sources.
