PPx, the newest light therapy treatment, is the latest procedure to be billed as a "pain-free" alternative to laser hair removal. It uses four to five times less energy than laser (which reduces the pain factor), but may take twice as long. The downside? PPx is more expensive than laser, it's not permanent, and it could still be uncomfortable – no matter what they tell you, says Rhonda Shupe, professor of the Cosmetics & Aesthetics Diploma Program at The Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology in Toronto. Cost can be as much as $500 per session, depending on area and hair texture.
