In fashion, there’s a focus on accessories, patterns and trends. But feeling comfortable and confident starts with a bra that fits you unfailingly and unapologetically, giving you the confidence to be unstoppable in every version of yourself.
What began in Montreal in 1939 as the Canadian Lady Corset Company has become synonymous with innovation in lingerie. A lot has changed for WonderBra in the 85 years since, but one thing has remained the same: the brand’s steadfast focus on modernity in crafting well-fitting, high-quality bras at a moderate price point.
To celebrate this milestone, we tapped Marianne Cobb, general manager of WonderBra Canada, for her expert tips on finding the right fit, building a bra wardrobe and extending the life of your bras. Whether they’re for relaxing at home, hitting the dance floor or navigating a busy day, keep reading to learn why investing in versatile, high-quality staples is always worthwhile.
The perfect bra is an essential base that symbolizes confidence and supports every version of you. “Seventy-five per cent of women wear the wrong size or don’t know how to adjust their bra properly,” says Cobb. She suggests approaching bra shopping in the way that makes you feel most comfortable, whether in-store or online (using WonderBra’s Bra Fit Finder can help).
To ensure comfort, your breasts should sit flush against the bra’s cups with no spilling or gapping. Your bra band should be straight across your back, not sliding up. Underwire should also sit flat and not poke your armpits or ribs. And, of course, you should feel totally comfortable and supported without any slipping, poking or pinching.
When it comes to building your bra wardrobe, it really depends on your personal style, your lifestyle and how often you do laundry. Cobb recommends that an everyday bra-wearer have five to seven bras to rotate through the week, while someone who wears bras a few times a week can get away with three to five.
“Everyone should also have special occasion bras and solution bras, such as strapless,” she says. Cobb recommends investing in a few everyday T-shirt bras, one strapless, some bralettes and wire-free bras for lounging, a few special occasion bras and one or two sports bras. “Neckline shapes and coverage vary based on cup size and individual preference,” she says. “That’s why it’s important to have options.”
A good bra is worth investing in. To ensure your WonderBras have a long life, Cobb recommends hand washing in cold water whenever possible. If you need to machine wash, a mesh laundry bag on a delicate cycle is best. Dryers can harm the elasticity and shape of bras, so always hang them. You’ll know it’s time for a new bra when your straps need constant adjusting, the bra is no longer as comfortable as it was or you feel less supported.
When it comes to smart design, the end goal should always be to make bra-wearing an enjoyable and comfortable experience. The recently launched WonderGel collection, for example, uses cutting-edge technology to blend style and comfort. “Today’s WonderBra strives for the experience of an unnoticeable bra,” says Cobb. “WonderGel is a testament to the thoughtful design that our teams excel in.”
