Texas and cowboy culture go hand in hand, offering unforgettable—and authentic—western experiences. But beyond the 10-gallon hats and horseback rides, Texas is a dynamic force of tradition and innovation. Its cities pulse with multicultural energy, its food scene is as global as it is homegrown, and its modern take on western life proves that the Lone Star State is as diverse and forward-thinking as it is iconic.

From embracing the full cowboy experience to sampling the western lifestyle on a smaller scale, here are four ways to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the state.

Boots and Beyond

Dressing the part—especially clothing or footwear—is essential for enjoying cowboy-inspired outdoor activities, whether opting for a timeless western look or a modern twist. Cowboy boots are an iconic staple and a perfect souvenir, with Texas offering an abundance of retailers to help visitors take home a piece of Lone Star style.

Lucchese Bootmaker, established in 1883, offers custom-made and pre-fab boots at locations across the state, featuring various widths, skins, patterns and detailing. Cavender’s, a popular chain since 1965, stocks everything a cowboy could need. Other great options include Wild Bill’s Western Store in Dallas, Pinto Ranch and Cuevas Western Wear in Houston, Callahan’s General Store in Austin and Justin Discount Boots and Cowboy Outfitters near Fort Worth.

In the Saddle

After gearing up, there’s no better way to experience Texas’s western spirit than through horseback riding—a beloved activity among locals and an unforgettable way to take in the state’s stunning scenery.

Travellers looking to experience an authentic western tradition can explore horseback-riding opportunities at various state and national parks. Palo Duro Canyon State Park, for example, has 1,500 acres to explore. It offers horses for rent, either for personal use or as a part of guided horseback-riding tours, which can range from a couple of hours to several days in duration.

Or, if horses aren’t your thing but you still want to hop in a saddle for a western thrill, try a round or two on a mechanical bull, like the one at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Rodeo

Standing 55 feet tall, in size 96 boots, Big Tex is the iconic “greeter” of the State Fair of Texas, a 24-day event packed with attractions, food and entertainment that embodies the state’s western charm. Notable rodeos include the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (January through February), the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo (in February), the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (in March), and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo (in March).

For more western-inspired fun, Texas offers over 100 farmers markets showcasing locally grown and made products, as well as artisan fairs in cities and small towns alike. Those looking to dance the night away can slip into their cowboy boots and enjoy live country music while mastering the Texas two-step at one of many dance halls across the state.

The western charm of Texas doesn’t fade after sunset. The state is home to numerous guest ranches offering overnight stays, many of which are all-inclusive and budget-friendly.

In Bandera, the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” the Mayan Dude Ranch features horseback riding, hayrides, nightly campfires and scenic trails, while the historic Dixie Dude Ranch, established in 1901 and open to the public in 1937, spans 725 acres as a working stock ranch.

For those seeking a more luxurious escape, the Cibolo Creek Ranch in Marfa’s Chinati Mountains offers a blend of history and elegance with 30,000 acres, three on-site forts from the 1800s and even its own airport. BlissWood Bed & Breakfast Ranch in Cat Spring, near Houston, combines serenity with outdoor activities like horseback riding, catch-and-release fishing and walks through its oak forest and meadows.
