There are many things I can think of that are synonymous with the holidays, but being from a food-oriented background I always immediately think of, well, food!  One of my earliest memories (before turkey, stuffing or cranberry sauce ever existed in my mind) is of candy canes. I loved peppermint candies as a kid, and the fact candy canes were every where during the holidays made me very happy.

Last week, The Allan Candy Company sent The Chatelaine Kitchen boxes and boxes of candy canes for the holidays. While I think I'm over the peppermint-crazy phase of my life, I still get excited about candy canes and they don’t just come in one flavour anymore. There is French vanilla, gingerbread, peach slices and red berries!

My fellow Kitchen colleagues and I took the opportunity to play with the flavours and here a few ideas we came up with that you can try over the holidays. Your kids will love them.

Flavoured Coffee/Hot Chocolate Stirrer

Place one flavoured candy cane in your hot coffee or chocolate. As the candy cane melts, your drink will be infused with the delicious candy flavour.

Sparkly Candy Cane Rim

Place any flavour candy cane in a Ziploc bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the candy cane into fine chunks.  Transfer crushed candy onto a small plate. Pour ¼ cup of clear corn syrup or melted white chocolate on another small plate. Holding a martini glass (or wine or shot glass) upside down, dip the rim into the syrup. Lift up and dip the rim into crushed candy. Lift and continue to press down into candy until rim is entirely coated. Fill with your desired drink. Pair the Red Berries with our Sparkling Pomegranate Punch or peppermint candy canes with our Classic Mint Julep
