In January 2014, Cate Blanchett called out a cameraman on the red carpet at the SAG awards for panning up and down her body to show her dress during an interview. "Do you do that to the guys?" she asked incredulously, bending down so that she could catch the camera with her eye. "What do you think is going to happen down here that's so fascinating?" Soon after, #AskHerMore was born - a movement to draw attention to all the idiotic questions posed to female celebrities. Since then, individual actors have staged their own mini-protests — Elisabeth Moss, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore and Amy Schumer to name a few — to highlight the flagrant sexism on display during Hollywood's award season.
Yesterday, a few awesome women continued the tradition, this time proudly pulling back the curtain on their pre-Golden Globes beauty routines: Drew Barrymore and Julia Louis-Dreyfus posed wearing face masks, while Kristen Bell posted a shot looking dressed-to-kill from the neck down, and just-out-of-bed from the neck up. While some have argued that focussing on fashion and looks is completely appropriate on the red carpet, any move that takes a not-so-subtle poke at the Hollywood beauty complex gets my applause.
