Today's pairing: Heinz-Kraft merger + skillet mac and cheese

This is Cooking the News, a daily column that pairs food with the news.

The news: Ketchup conglomerate H.J. Heinz Co. is joining forces with the KD pushers at Kraft Foods Group Inc., creating the third-largest food company in North America. According to The Globe and Mail, the deal affords Heinz access to all Kraft properties — see: Oscar Mayer's wieners, bear-emblazoned peanut butter — which can apparently be found in as many as "98 per cent of North American households." The packaged-food industry has taken a big hit lately, as consumers increasingly gravitate towards healthier options.

The dish: A formidable skillet-full of macaroni, packed with bacon, creamy Mornay sauce and cheese. Feel free to pair it with our homemade ketchup. Get the recipe here.
