Five cool things to do this week (August 30 to September 5)

Happy Long Weekend! Make the most of this glorious summer week by living it up at a block party, catching a CFL game, attending an air show, then follow it all with some much earned Zzzz's.

1. iTunes Music Festival

A month of free music returns to the Roundhouse in London, England with more than 60 artists performing over 30 consecutive nights as part of the iTunes live concert series. Just because you're not there, doesn't mean you can't catch a free show. Attend virtually each night from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Apple TV. The festival kicks off with none other than Lady Gaga.

2. Toast the Labour Day Classic

If your love for football doesn't extend past cult-favourite Friday Night Lights, then you aren't alone. Trust us, we get it. However, there's a time and place to celebrate the sport, and this weekend it's etched in Canadian tradition thanks to the "Labour Day Classic." Edmonton will play Calgary, Saskatchewan will face Winnipeg, and ribs will be on the BBQ and long-pours of lager will be on tap. Pick your team and remember what Coach Taylor said, "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose."

3. Catch up on your Zzzz's

Easier said than done, right? The summer months while gloriously packed with sun-soaked parties have a tendency to leave us a little sleep deprived. You think, "one more patio cocktail, this weather isn't going to last forever!" With that, it's been said seven is the number of hours of sleep needed each night. Consistently getting one hour less each night raises risk of early death by 11 per cent. Less than four hours a night increases mortality risk 83 per cent. It's the long weekend, do your mind and body a favour and have a long (sober) nap.

4. Look to the sky

Amidst the fireworks in the sky across the country over the long weekend, Snowbirds and CF-18 hornets will be taking flight. Got a budding pilot in the family? Take them down to the CNE for the International Air Show. (It's free with admission into the CNE.)

5. Get to know your neighbours

One thing Canadians know how to do well is celebrate long weekends, and celebrate it together. Rub elbows with your community and hit a street party! Local musical talent, homegrown eats, and a whole lot of dancing will leave you feeling really proud to be part of your vibrant neighbourhood. If there isn't anything planned in your area, that shouldn't stop you from knocking on your neighbours door. Street potlucks just require a long table to host your homemade dishes.
