Remodelista

A remodeller's manual

In 2007, Julie Carlson along with Francesca Connolly, Janet Hall,  and Sarah Lonsdale launched Remodelista.com, a practical and helpful guide to remodelling the home. Later the talented Christine Chang Hanway also joined the team. Their new book, Remodelista: A Manual for the Considered Home (Published by Artisan), is a must-read for anyone contemplating a renovation. It's chock full of beautiful images, design ideas, how-tos and budget-friendly tips. If you're considering a home makeover, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Your sofa

Of all your furnishings, the couch gets used, and abused, the most. Pay for one that's well-made and comfortable and looks great in your space (and if it's floating in the room, make sure the back is as presentable as the front).

The kitchen

If you love to cook or are feeding a family, a great kitchen is not only life-enhancing but life-changing. Conversely, if you eat out for every meal, no need to splurge on a fancy range.

Craftsmanship

If you value high-quality work and have an eye for details, there is no way to cut corners here.
